How I Think About Health

When someone books without a complaint, I go through a checklist before anything else, and most of it is not my work. I think that is the correct order.

Screening. Is blood pressure checked. Is cervical screening current — and self-collection is available now if it has been put off. Bowel screening kit returned, from fifty. Skin check, in Australia. Glucose and lipids according to risk. Immunisations up to date, including shingles vaccine where eligible. Dental. Eyes. Bone density where there are risk factors.

Bloods worth having once. Iron studies with ferritin, full blood count, thyroid function, B12, vitamin D. Not because everyone needs them annually, but because a single set explains a great deal of vague tiredness and nobody should be treating that symptom without them.

The ordinary things. Sleep hours actually achieved. Movement, and resistance work twice a week from mid-life for bone and muscle. Alcohol counted. Daylight.

What I do not recommend: supplements for deficiencies nobody has measured, detoxes, hair mineral analysis, food intolerance blood panels, or commercial microbiome tests. They produce authoritative-looking results that rarely change what anyone should do, and the money is better spent elsewhere.

What I then offer is treatment for whatever specific thing is bothering you, with a review point rather than a standing appointment. A wellbeing visit that turns into an indefinite fortnightly booking has stopped being wellbeing and become a subscription, and I would rather see you twice a year with something to work on than every fortnight with nothing.

The clinic is in Lane Cove, opposite the library and metres from Longueville Road.
