Ayurveda is the traditional medicine of the Indian subcontinent, and it works from constitution: the practitioner assesses your dosha — the balance of vata, pitta and kapha — and prescribes accordingly. Two people with the same complaint and different constitutions get different advice, which is the logic of the system.

Prescriptions come as powders, tablets or decoctions, and they usually arrive alongside dietary and daily-routine advice, which in Ayurveda carries as much weight as the herbs themselves.

Two things to know. Ayurvedic practice is **not** registered with AHPRA in Australia, so look for a recognised qualification and association membership. And some traditional Ayurvedic preparations have been found to contain heavy metals — insist on products from a supplier that batch-tests, and be wary of anything brought in privately.
