Body Gua Sha and Facial Gua Sha: A Beginner's Introduction

7:34 pm 24 October 2026 0 Comments

The word gua sha covers both gentle facial routines and firmer body techniques. Christine explains why it helps to know which one you mean before booking at Lane Cove.

One name, two quite different practices

Type gua sha into a search bar and you will see two worlds: gentle facial routines with smooth stones, and firmer scraping techniques on the back, neck or limbs. Dr Christine Shen, Acupuncturist, often meets beginners who are not sure which one they are asking about. That is completely understandable, because the same term is used for both.

Even so, the two should not be treated as one procedure with one set of goals. Pressure, purpose, aftercare and suitability can all differ considerably.

Illustrative, Lane Cove: Dr Christine Shen, Acupuncturist, uses a jade gua sha tool on the cheek of a client lying with eyes closed.

Being clear about what you are after

When you speak with Christine, try to describe which kind of gua sha you have in mind and what you hope it will offer. You might be looking for a relaxing facial routine, or you might be curious about body gua sha for muscle tension. Each leads to a slightly different conversation.

It is also worth asking about your skin’s suitability, how much pressure would be used and what aftercare to follow.

When gua sha may not be suitable

A popular tool sold online does not mean the technique is right for every situation. If you have a rash, a recent injury, broken skin or symptoms that have not been explained, mention them first. These may need assessment by your GP, and they can affect whether gua sha is appropriate.

Paying attention to your skin afterwards

Before booking a further session, notice how your skin has responded. Tell Christine about any tenderness that stayed, any irritation or any bruising that surprised you. She can then talk with you about whether to continue, use a lighter technique or consider something else entirely. Tools and pressure should suit your skin, not a picture you have seen.

Starting gently in Lane Cove

Whether your interest is facial or body gua sha, a first conversation at the Lane Cove clinic can help you understand which practice fits your goals before anything begins.
