Dramatic photos can make deep redness look like the point of gua sha. Christine prefers tolerable pressure and lets your skin recovery guide what happens next.
Summer articles about gua sha are often illustrated with backs covered in vivid red or purple streaks. Those images can quietly set an expectation: if your skin does not look like that, perhaps the treatment was not done properly. It is an idea worth letting go of.

Dr Christine Shen, Acupuncturist, uses gua sha at the Lane Cove clinic with an emphasis on comfort. How the skin colours after a session depends on pressure, skin type, medicines and other factors. A deep mark is not a measure of success, and chasing one at home can lead to irritation or injury.
Before starting, you and Christine will agree on a pressure you can tolerate comfortably. You can ask her to lighten it at any point. If an area becomes sore or irritated, she will stop there rather than continue because the colour seems faint.
If you use gua sha at home, follow the same principle. Avoid going over the same spot again and again, and never work over broken, inflamed or already bruised skin. Aiming for a photograph can turn a gentle practice into a harmful one.
Instead of asking whether the skin looks red enough, a more useful question is whether gua sha suits you and whether the concern that brought you in is being addressed safely.
Before another appointment, mention any soreness that hung around, irritation or bruising that looked unusual. Christine will choose tools and pressure for your circumstances, not to reproduce dramatic colouring. Depending on what you describe, she may continue, adapt the method or suggest another option.
Gentle care can still feel satisfying. Many people are pleasantly surprised by how relaxing a lighter session is. If you would like to see what moderate pressure feels like, ask Christine for a short demonstration in Lane Cove before deciding whether gua sha is something you want to continue.
