Taking the First Practical Step Towards Psychological Support

7:14 pm 24 October 2026 0 Comments

Wanting help and arranging it are two different steps. Christine looks at the practical obstacles that delay a first psychotherapy appointment and simple ways to move past them in Lane Cove.

Wanting help is not the same as booking it

Many people know they would like some support and still find weeks or months passing before they reach out. Dr Christine Shen, Acupuncturist, who holds qualifications in psychotherapy, understands how ordinary that gap is. Questions about cost, finding a time that fits around work or family, language and simply not knowing what to say can all get in the way.

Pinning down which hurdle is holding you back can be surprisingly helpful. Once the obstacle has a name, it often becomes easier to solve.

Practical questions are welcome

Before your first session with Christine, feel free to ask about fees, available appointment times, how sessions are run and any arrangements that matter to you personally. None of these questions commits you to anything. They simply help you decide whether the next step is manageable.

If the idea of explaining everything feels overwhelming, try writing down a single concern you would like to talk about. One sentence on a piece of paper is a perfectly good starting point, and it can ease the pressure of finding the right words in the moment.

No long commitment required up front

You do not need to decide in advance how many sessions you will attend or what the whole process will look like. Getting clear on the practical details can make it easier to take the next step without feeling locked into a lengthy course.

Keeping the work centred on you

Once sessions begin, there is space to discuss what you want to understand better, what seems hard to change and how you will notice progress. You can ask Christine how and when the approach will be reviewed, and what other support might be appropriate if your situation changes between appointments, including involving your GP where that makes sense.

Reaching out in Lane Cove

Christine offers psychotherapy at the Lane Cove clinic. If something practical has been holding you back, mentioning it when you first get in touch is a sensible place to begin.
