Your smartwatch can turn recovery into a single number, but heart rate variability depends on context. Christine explains how to bring tracking data into an acupuncture conversation.
Wearable devices have made it easy to check heart rate variability each morning, and it is tempting to read that figure as a report card. Dr Christine Shen, Acupuncturist, sees more people arriving with tracking apps open on their phones, and she is happy to look at the data with them. She also encourages a little caution in how it is read.
Heart rate variability shifts with many influences. How you slept, how active you were the day before, the conditions at the time of measurement and plenty of other factors can all nudge a reading up or down. A single result only makes sense alongside the circumstances in which it was taken.

If a reading changes after an acupuncture session, it can be interesting to notice. Still, a shifted number is no evidence that acupuncture has mended the vagus nerve or anything else. Wearables measure patterns; they do not explain causes.
When you share your tracking data with Christine, add some context. How did you feel on those days? Were you travelling, unwell, stressed or sleeping poorly? Combining that information with the trend gives a far richer picture than chasing a single ideal score.

Your symptoms and how you are managing everyday activities remain central to any discussion. A trend line is one source of information, and your own experience is another.
It helps to distinguish the symptom you would like support with from the outcome you are hoping for. Perhaps you want to feel more comfortable during a regular task, understand a problem more clearly or know when a medical review would be wise. Agree with Christine on a point at which you will look back, and on the signs that would justify a different approach.
If you track your health with a wearable, you are welcome to bring a few weeks of readings to the Lane Cove clinic. Notes about sleep and stress over the same period will make them much easier to interpret together.
