What You Might Talk About in a First Psychotherapy Session

7:05 pm 24 October 2026 0 Comments

You can begin psychotherapy without having everything worked out. Christine describes what a first conversation in Freshwater may explore and which questions help you judge the fit.

You can arrive unsure

Plenty of people delay seeking psychological support because they feel they should be able to explain their situation neatly first. That is not necessary. Dr Christine Shen, Acupuncturist, also holds qualifications in psychotherapy, and she is comfortable starting wherever you are. A first conversation might simply open with what has become hard lately, how long it has been going on and what you would like to be different.

Other parts of daily life can help fill in the picture. How you are sleeping, what is happening in your relationships and at work, and whether you have had support before can all give Christine a sensible place to begin.

Questions worth raising early

A first session is also your chance to find out how things will work. You might ask how goals are decided together, how you will both know whether the sessions are helping, and what confidentiality looks like in day-to-day terms. These are ordinary questions, and asking them is a sign of engagement rather than doubt.

Be wary of any expectation that a set number of sessions suits everyone, because it does not. Similarly, the name of a therapy method on its own will not tell you whether the working relationship feels right for you.

Keeping your priorities at the centre

Good psychological care leaves space for what matters to you. Over time you can talk about what you want to understand better, which changes feel hard to make and how you will notice progress in your own life. It is also reasonable to ask Christine when you will look back over the work together and what other support might be available if your circumstances shift between appointments. If a different service or referral would suit you better, that can be discussed openly too.

Seeing Christine in Freshwater

Psychotherapy appointments with Christine are available at the Freshwater clinic. If you are unsure whether you are ready, a single first conversation can help you decide what kind of support you want next.
