Breathing Discomfort Needs More Than a Gua Sha Anecdote

7:43 pm 24 October 2026 0 Comments

Hearing that gua sha helped someone breathe more freely is one thing; it reveals little about your own symptoms. Christine explains why breathlessness needs proper assessment first.

Interesting stories, limited guidance

You may have read or heard about someone who felt they could breathe more easily after a gua sha session. Accounts like that can be intriguing. Dr Christine Shen, Acupuncturist, is happy to hear about them, but she is clear that one person’s experience cannot explain why someone else is having trouble breathing.

Breathing difficulties have many possible causes. Some are linked to tension or stress, while others involve the heart, lungs or other parts of the body and need prompt medical attention.

New breathlessness comes first

If shortness of breath is new, unexplained, getting worse or accompanied by chest pain, dizziness or swelling, please see your GP promptly or contact emergency services if it feels severe. Gua sha is not the right starting point in those situations.

Talking about stress and tension

When stress and muscle tension are part of your conversation with Christine, it helps to be specific about your breathing. Is the change recent or long-standing? Does it come and go, or is it constant? Does it occur alongside other symptoms such as coughing, wheezing or tiredness?

Try not to assume that breathing changes are caused by stress simply because life has been busy. It is easy to explain symptoms away when you are under pressure, and that can delay a necessary check-up.

Separating relaxation goals from symptoms

A suitable plan starts by distinguishing a goal such as feeling more relaxed through the shoulders from a symptom that requires investigation. Once that distinction is clear, Christine can discuss whether gua sha has a place, and if so, how pressure and skin recovery will be managed. Let her know about any lingering soreness or unusual bruising before another session.

A considered approach in Freshwater

Christine offers gua sha at the Freshwater clinic for people whose breathing concerns have already been looked at medically. Bringing a note of any tests or advice from your GP helps her see the full picture.
