Choosing a Psychotherapy Approach That Suits Your Needs

7:13 pm 24 October 2026 0 Comments

The list of therapy styles can feel endless. Christine, who holds psychotherapy qualifications, explains why feeling safe and understood matters more than picking a theory in advance.

Too many names to choose from

Looking into psychological support can quickly turn into reading about one theory after another, each with its own vocabulary. It is easy to feel that you must work out which approach is correct before you even make contact. Dr Christine Shen, Acupuncturist, who also holds qualifications in psychotherapy, would like to lift that burden. You do not need to arrive knowing which school of therapy suits you.

Choosing the right kind of support is something you can work out together, once there is a sense of what you are dealing with and what you want from the process.

What fit actually looks like

Fit is less about a label and more about how the work feels. Do you feel safe enough to speak honestly? Do the explanations you are given make sense to you? Are the goals being set ones that reflect your own priorities rather than someone else’s idea of progress?

You are welcome to ask Christine how her suggested approach connects to the concerns you have raised, and how it might be adapted if something is not working. These conversations are part of a collaborative relationship, not a sign that something has gone wrong.

Room for change and referral

Sometimes the most useful outcome of a discussion is recognising that another style of therapy, or a different practitioner or service, would serve you better. A good working relationship leaves space for that possibility. Christine is open to talking about referral when it would genuinely help.

Reviewing as you go

Psychological care works well when your priorities stay at the heart of it. Over time you might explore what you want to understand, what feels stubborn or hard to shift and how you will know that things are moving in a helpful direction. It is reasonable to agree on regular points to step back and review together.

Talking about fit in Freshwater

Christine offers psychotherapy at the Freshwater clinic. An initial session can focus entirely on whether her way of working feels like a good match for you.
