Cupping reaches back far beyond recent sports and social media images. Christine explains the different forms and why your present health should guide any choice.
Many people first noticed cupping through photographs of athletes with circular marks or through social media posts. In fact, cupping has a long history across several traditions. Dr Christine Shen, Acupuncturist, finds that knowing a little about that history can make the technique feel less mysterious and more understandable.
There are also different forms. Stationary cupping leaves cups in one place for a time, while moving cupping glides them across the skin with oil. Other variations exist too. These names describe distinct procedures, so it makes sense to ask what each would feel like and what it would be aiming for, instead of assuming one style suits everybody.
A helpful way into the conversation is to tell Christine what you would like to manage more comfortably. That might be turning your head while driving, reaching to a high shelf or getting back to a sport or hobby. Naming something specific makes it easier to choose an approach and to notice whether anything changes.
Agree together on how that goal will be looked at again over the coming sessions.
Learning about cupping’s past can add depth to your understanding. Even so, decisions about treatment need to reflect your health today, your preferences and how you respond. A technique’s age does not make it suitable for every person.
At your next appointment, return to the activity you named. Talk about how the session felt, how your skin recovered and whether everyday tasks seem any different. Marks can be noted, but they are not the measure of success. Continuing or changing course should come down to your goal, your experience and the other options open to you.
If cupping has caught your interest, whether through history or a recent photo, the Freshwater clinic is a good place to ask Christine which form she might suggest for you and why.
