Starting Therapy With One Concern, at Your Own Pace

8:05 pm 24 October 2026 0 Comments

Many people wait until things feel unbearable before seeking help. Christine invites you to begin with a single concern, at a pace that leaves you in charge.

A common thought holds people back from therapy: if I need help, I must be failing. So they wait, sometimes for years, until the difficulty feels impossible to carry. Support systems vary from country to country, but that private hesitation seems almost universal.

Reframing the first step

Seeking psychological help is a way of looking after yourself, much like seeing a physiotherapist for a sore back. In her Freshwater practice, Dr Christine Shen, Acupuncturist, draws on her psychotherapy qualifications, and she often reminds new clients that there is no threshold of distress you must reach before you deserve to be heard.

Starting small

You do not need to tell your whole story in the first session. Many people begin by describing one thing that has been bothering them and asking how therapy might help with it. From there, you decide how much to share and when.

Practical questions that ease the decision

  • What happens in a first session?
  • How is my privacy protected, and what are the limits of confidentiality?
  • What are the fees, and how often might sessions occur?
  • Is a referral or mental health plan from my GP relevant to me?

Having these answers in advance can make the idea of starting feel far less daunting.

Working out a direction together

Good therapy follows your priorities rather than a set script. With Christine you can explore what you would like to understand, what has felt hard to change and what signs would tell you things are moving. It is fair to ask how she checks in on the work over time, and where to turn if something changes between appointments. If your situation calls for a different service or medical input, she will discuss that with you openly.

Should you ever feel at risk, please reach out to emergency services or a crisis service such as Lifeline rather than waiting for a session.

A door that stays open

Making contact does not lock you into anything. You might have one conversation and decide to wait, and that is fine. Whenever you feel ready, Christine will be glad to hear from you, and the first meeting in Freshwater can be as gentle as you need it to be.
