Herbal claims about Lyme disease mix very different kinds of evidence. Christine explains why medical care stays central and how granule products are discussed safely alongside it in Freshwater.
If you have been researching Lyme disease, you may have found traditional Chinese medicine articles describing it through their own diagnostic concepts. Dr Christine Shen, Acupuncturist, thinks it is important to be clear about what such writing can and cannot offer. A traditional explanation of a condition does not demonstrate that a herbal formula can clear an infection from the body.
Claims also come in different forms. A laboratory finding, a personal story and a clinical study each answer a different question, and a list of ingredients is not a personal plan.
If you have been bitten by a tick, have received a diagnosis or are living with ongoing symptoms, the first conversation should be with your GP about assessment and medical care. When you speak with Christine, bring your diagnosis, a summary of the investigations done so far and the details of any herbal products you already use.
Tell her about every medicine you take, including antibiotics, before any complementary care is added. Please do not delay seeing your doctor, or change prescribed medicines, because you have started or switched a herbal product.
Questions about supportive approaches can be explored, but only alongside established medical care and with clear, modest expectations. Be wary of anyone suggesting that an untested protocol will rid you of an infection. Christine does not make that kind of promise.
Christine supplies Chinese herbal medicine as granules in labelled bottles. Should one become part of your plan, make sure you know its exact name, the written measuring and storage directions and an agreed time to reassess it. Keep the sheet with the bottle. Let Christine know if your doctor starts, stops or changes a medicine, and tell your pharmacist about the herbal product. If an unfamiliar symptom appears, contact the clinic rather than adjusting the amount on your own.

Living with long-running symptoms can make anyone want to try everything at once. At the Freshwater clinic, Christine will be frank about where a herbal product might sit beside your medical care and where it simply does not belong.
