Herbal Paste Traditions and Your Own Granule Prescription

8:24 pm 24 October 2026 0 Comments

Winter paste traditions make absorbing reading. Christine shares the culture while keeping the focus on your own granule prescription, its written directions and what suits you.

In Shanghai and surrounding regions, herbal pastes have long been part of winter custom. Making them is a craft in its own right, involving slow cooking, careful reduction and ingredients chosen with great attention. Reading about the process can be absorbing.

Admiring the craft

Dr Christine Shen, Acupuncturist, enjoys sharing the cultural background of Chinese medicine with the people she sees in Lane Cove. Understanding how traditional preparations were made can deepen appreciation for a living tradition.

A recipe is not a prescription

However engaging the history, a story about how a paste is produced does not establish that it suits every reader. Christine dispenses herbal medicine as granules in labelled bottles, not as pastes or home recipes, and following a traditional preparation method alongside your granules is not part of the plan. Similar symptoms, or similar-looking containers, do not mean two people need the same product either.

Focusing on what is proposed for you

A consultation centres on your circumstances rather than on recreating a recipe from overseas. You might ask:

  • Which product has been selected, and why?
  • Why are its directions written the way they are?
  • How will its use be reviewed?
  • Is a herbal product the right step for me at all?

Sometimes the most useful outcome is a clear decision not to use one.

Practical safeguards

If you do go ahead, keep the label and the written sheet together with the bottle. Ask Christine before substituting another product, combining products or adding anything from a traditional recipe. Tell her about any change to your medicines, and mention the herbal product to your GP and pharmacist. If a symptom appears and you are unsure of its cause, ask her before adjusting the amount.

Illustrative: two matching white herbal granule bottles side by side on a timber table, a treatment bed and gong blurred in the background.

Culture and care side by side

Curiosity about tradition and careful personal decisions sit together comfortably. Christine often finds that an interest in old customs leads people to ask sharper questions about their own care. If you have a family recipe book or a keepsake jar from a trip, bring it to Lane Cove and enjoy talking it over with her.
