Acupuncture rarely feels like an injection. Christine describes the range of sensations people report and why your comfort guides every decision during a session in Lane Cove.
Many people walk into their first session with Dr Christine Shen, Acupuncturist, braced for something like a vaccination. In practice, the experience tends to be more varied than that. Some notice a quick prick as the needle goes in, followed by a sense of heaviness, a spreading tingle or a dull ache around the area. Others report feeling almost nothing at all. There is no correct sensation to aim for, and no reason to compare yours with what a friend described.
Christine finds it far more helpful when people simply describe what they notice in their own words. A vague “it’s fine” can hide useful information, while “it feels warm and heavy in my calf” gives her something concrete to work with.

Some feelings should be mentioned straight away. If anything becomes sharp, burning, upsetting or steadily stronger, say so rather than waiting for the session to end. Gritting your teeth through discomfort in the belief that it must be part of the process does not help anyone make good decisions.
Your willingness to continue matters just as much as the physical sensation. Christine will check in during treatment, but you never need to wait to be asked. A needle can be adjusted or removed, and a session can be shortened or paused.

Sensations are only one part of the picture. Before any needling, it is worth clarifying the symptom you want support with and the outcome you would value, whether that is easier movement during a particular task, a better understanding of the problem or a clearer sense of when to seek another opinion. Ask how the plan will be reviewed and what would lead Christine to suggest a different approach.
If nervousness about needle sensations has been holding you back, that worry is a perfectly good place to start a conversation. At the Lane Cove clinic, Christine can explain what a session might involve and listen to your concerns before anything is decided.
