Seeing Yourself in a BPD Article: When an Assessment May Help

7:39 pm 24 October 2026 0 Comments

Spotting yourself in a piece on borderline personality disorder can stir up questions. Christine explains why recognition is not diagnosis and when a mental health assessment may help.

When an article feels familiar

Reading about borderline personality disorder can be unsettling if parts of it seem to describe you. Intense emotions, turbulent relationships or a strong fear of being rejected may sound very close to home. Dr Christine Shen, Acupuncturist, brings psychotherapy qualifications to this kind of conversation, and she wants to stress one point gently: recognising yourself in a description is not the same as having a diagnosis.

Experiences like these can arise for many different reasons. Stress, past events, other health conditions and current circumstances can all play a part, and only a proper assessment can begin to tell them apart.

Turning recognition into something useful

If an article struck a chord, try writing down a few concrete examples. What happened, how did you feel and how did it affect your work, relationships or daily routine? Specific situations are far more helpful than a general sense that a list fits.

You can bring those notes to a session with Christine and talk them through. Part of that conversation may be whether a dedicated mental health assessment, for example through your GP, a psychiatrist or a psychologist, would be a sensible next step. Christine will be honest about whether her sessions suit your needs or whether another service would be more appropriate.

Support over labels

The aim is to find appropriate support and a clearer understanding of what you are going through. Fitting yourself into a checklist, or expecting a single word to account for everything you find hard, rarely leads anywhere helpful.

If you are struggling right now

If you are in distress or feel unsafe, please contact your GP, a crisis support line or emergency services rather than waiting for an appointment.

A first step in Freshwater

Christine sees psychotherapy clients at the Freshwater clinic, and bringing your written examples to a first meeting can help you both decide what kind of support makes sense from here.
