Old acupuncture texts set out a number of ways to structure care. Christine explains how those traditional ideas inform her reasoning without dictating identical treatment for everyone.
Classical acupuncture texts describe several ways of organising treatment, using terms such as regulating, unblocking and guiding. Dr Christine Shen, Acupuncturist, finds these ideas a rich part of the tradition she draws on. They describe how practitioners have reasoned about care for centuries.
What these terms do not mean is that everyone with the same symptom should receive the same points or the same kind of stimulation. Traditional theory provides a way of thinking, not a fixed recipe.

You are entitled to an explanation that makes sense to you. Ask Christine to describe her proposed plan in everyday words that connect with what you are actually experiencing. Which concern is the focus? Why have these particular points been chosen? How will the two of you know whether your response is heading in a useful direction?
If a classical term comes up, feel free to ask what it means in practical terms for your session.
Participating fully in decisions about your care does not require learning classical vocabulary. What matters is that you can talk openly about your comfort, your goals and whether continuing still seems worthwhile.
Consider what troubles you and, separately, what you would count as a good result. You might like an activity to feel easier, to understand your situation better or to know when it is time to seek a medical opinion. Agree with Christine on how and when progress will be considered, and what would lead to a change in approach.
For those interested in the classical roots of acupuncture, sessions at the Lane Cove clinic offer a chance to ask questions about how tradition informs Christine’s reasoning while keeping the plan grounded in your own needs.
