Why a Full Medicine List Helps Your Herbal Consultation

The items people forget, from a sleep supplement to an online purchase, can matter in a herbal consultation. Christine explains what to list and why to bring your granule bottles too.

Most people can name their regular prescription medicines without much trouble. It is the occasional items that slip the mind: a herbal tea taken when stressed, a protein powder, a sleep supplement used now and then, or a cream from the pharmacy. Those details can matter when herbal medicine is being considered.

Making the list before the appointment

In herbal consultations at the Freshwater clinic, Dr Christine Shen, Acupuncturist, finds that a written list makes for a much clearer conversation. Rather than relying on memory in the consultation room, try to bring:

  • product names, ideally with the labels or photos of them;
  • roughly how often you use each item;
  • medicines prescribed by your GP or other doctors;
  • anything bought online;
  • anything you have started or stopped since your last visit.

Bring the bottles themselves

Christine dispenses herbal medicine as granules in labelled bottles. If you already have some, bring the bottles or a photo of each label, so the discussion concerns the actual preparations you hold rather than a half-remembered name.

Natural does not mean automatically compatible

Two products both labelled natural can still interact, or overlap in ways that are not obvious. Sharing the full picture allows Christine to consider how a herbal formula sits alongside everything else. Please check with her before adding any new product once a prescription has started.

Looking after the paperwork

A personal herbal plan should include the product name, written measuring directions and an arrangement for review. Keep those details with the original bottle. When another clinician changes your medicines, tell Christine rather than assuming the earlier herbal plan still holds. If a new symptom appears and you are unsure whether the granules play a part, get in touch with her instead of trialling a different amount on your own.

Illustrative: two blank white bottles, one set slightly behind the other, on a wooden table with a red blind and stone wall in the distance.

An easy habit to build

A running note on your phone, updated whenever something changes, keeps the list current without much effort. It helps at every health appointment, and a pharmacist or hospital team can read the same information if you ever need urgent care. Open it at the start of your next Freshwater visit and Christine can go through it with you item by item.
