Recognising a few ingredients on a label is not the same as understanding a formula. Christine explains why similar-looking granule bottles are never interchangeable and what to ask about yours.
Look at the label of a Chinese herbal formula and you may recognise several of the ingredients. It might seem that each plant was chosen simply for its reputation. Dr Christine Shen, Acupuncturist, explains that prescribing in traditional Chinese medicine works differently. In traditional theory, a formula is considered as a whole and matched to the particular way a person presents at the time.
Christine dispenses herbal medicine as granules in labelled bottles. Two bottles can carry similar names or look almost identical, yet differ in composition and in the directions written for them. Reading the ingredients on someone else's label will not tell you enough to judge whether their product would suit you.

Knowing how formulas are put together can help you ask sharper questions. Which product has been selected for you? Why is it being considered? Where are its individual instructions, and when will Christine review the plan with you?
It also explains why borrowing a friend's bottle is not a good idea, even if your symptoms sound alike. The same applies to mixing your own blend from an ingredient list found online. Traditional explanations can be fascinating, but they are not evidence that a formula works for every condition it has been linked with.
Any herbal plan you agree on should come with the exact product name, clear measuring and storage directions and a planned review. Keep that sheet with the original container. Let Christine know if your doctor changes any of your medicines, and mention the herbal product to your pharmacist as well. If a new symptom appears that you cannot explain, contact the clinic for advice instead of altering the dose on your own.
If you have wondered how a particular formula was chosen for you, or for someone close to you, those questions are a natural part of a herbal consultation.

At the Freshwater clinic, Christine is glad to explain the thinking behind a formula in plain language. Bring every bottle you currently have, even ones you have stopped using, so nothing is left out of the picture.
