Is a Sound Session Right for You? Looking Past the Trend

7:55 pm 24 October 2026 0 Comments

Sound sessions are everywhere at the moment. Before booking, Christine suggests asking yourself what you are really hoping for, and choosing the conversation that fits.

Scroll through any wellness feed and you will find sound baths, gong evenings and vibration sessions promoted with soft lighting and glowing reviews. When something is this visible, it can start to feel like an experience everyone ought to try. Popularity tells you a lot about interest, though, and very little about whether a session will resolve a health concern.

Clarifying what you are after

Dr Christine Shen, Acupuncturist, offers sound sessions at the Freshwater clinic, and she also holds qualifications in psychotherapy. Because of that mix, she often asks people to pause and consider which of these they are looking for:

  • a quiet, restful hour away from screens and noise;
  • psychological support for something that has been weighing on them;
  • help understanding a symptom that keeps coming back.

Each of these calls for a different kind of appointment. A sound session belongs firmly in the first group, as a relaxation and wellbeing experience. An ongoing symptom deserves assessment, which may include your GP.

Questions before you book

Ask what the session involves, how long it runs and what you will be doing during it. Keep your expectations in proportion. A high price, a novel instrument or a dramatic advertisement says nothing reliable about the value of the experience for you.

Adjusting the experience

Once you are in the room, you have plenty of say over how it feels. Volume can be lowered, instruments moved further away, and seating changed. You can stop whenever you wish. Nobody expects tears, visions or deep stillness; you might simply find the sound pleasant, and that is enough.

Let Christine know if anything feels like too much. She is careful to describe a sound session as an enjoyable way to relax, not as a remedy for a medical condition.

Deciding at your own pace

If you are still unsure, a short chat before booking can help you decide whether sound, talking therapy or another kind of appointment suits your current needs. Christine would rather you choose with clear eyes than book because a trend made it feel urgent, and she is happy to answer questions about what a Freshwater session is like.
