A photo of a moxa stick shows only one of several options. Christine explains why the form of moxibustion matters less than whether a particular application suits you.
Most images of moxibustion show a smoking stick held above the skin, so it is natural to assume every session looks like that. Dr Christine Shen, Acupuncturist, explains that moxibustion can involve several forms of mugwort material and a range of ways to deliver warmth. A single picture cannot tell you how your own session would be carried out.
Knowing that variety exists makes it easier to ask useful questions rather than arriving with fixed expectations.
Before a session, ask Christine which form she is considering for you and the reasoning behind that choice. You might also ask how close the heat source will be, how long it will be used and how you can signal if it becomes too warm.
Think back to times when smoke or warmth bothered you, perhaps around a campfire, burning incense or a heater, and tell Christine about them. These experiences can be relevant to choosing a comfortable approach.
It can be tempting to favour whichever product looks most authentic or gives off the strongest aroma. The more important question is whether a particular application suits your skin, your breathing and your comfort. Christine will weigh those factors rather than appearance or tradition alone.
Settle on a simple signal for discomfort before any heat is applied, and ask what aftercare you should follow. Sensitive skin, reduced feeling in an area and any reaction to smoke are all part of that planning. Keep in mind that advice written for someone else, or a routine found online, cannot tell you what your own body needs.
During a visit to the Lane Cove clinic, Christine is able to show you the different forms of moxa she works with and explain which, if any, might suit you. Let her know about any breathing sensitivities when you book.
